Hello doctor. I have a question concerning STDs (venerial disease) and hair loss. I hope this question does not sound absurd, but I am really unfamiliar with the connection between STDs and hair loss. Are there any STDs that can trigger or cause hair loss in a male? Also, can herpes/crabs be passed onto the hair on your head? For example, if someone were to touch their vagina and then…  Read More →

Hello Doctor, This is a hairline receding question. I have witnessed hair thinning and the hairline receding on the far right side of the temple. I’m certain that the same is making it’s way to the otherside and I’m not quite sure what to make of it. I am 25 years old and this thinning has gained pace ever since I moved to the eastern part of the country, some people say it’s because of the high iron content in the water...

Dear Dr, I was wondering what the percentages are for DPA vs regular progression of male patterned baldness? I am 30 years old and have a norwood 2 or 3 pattern but most of the men in my family are bald to a large degree. Only my father has a complete head of hair. Regards I don’t have statistics directly comparing diffuse patterned alopecia (DPA) to male pattern baldness (MPB). We don’t get asked all that much about DPA here, so  Read More →

Hi Doc! During my teenage years, I used to completely shave my head (0 mm) during the summers. I quickly changed my mind each time due to my flat head shape that bothered me. At age 28, I’ve been experiencing a slow hair loss progression in a class 4A-pattern for some years, still fairly invisible to others I hope. This made me shave my head completely once again, revealing that the front of my head now didn’t look as flat as before....

An electrologist removed a lot of my eyebrows without my permission, leaving me with an ugly, too thin shape. It’s been 9 months since then and not enough hairs have grown back to improve the shape. Since she only treated the hairs once, do you have any idea how many of the follicles could still be alive, even if they’re damaged? And do you have any advice about things I could do to repair damaged but not destroyed follicles so that...

I went to this place to try cyberhair. They tied three artificial hairs to one of my own hairs and did this for a total of 100 hairs. After the procedure, there was pain in the area that they worked. A few hairs came out from the procedure. Is this legitimate? Cyberhair was developed by Aderans, a large maker of wigs and owner of hair transplant chains Bosley and Medical … [ visit site to read more ]  Read More →

In response to My Hair on Top is Thick, But My Sides Are Thinning Quickly! You said, “ If you are thinning only on the sides, something that I have rarely seen, it’s often associated with diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA). ” Doctor….How the heck can he have DUPA if only his sides are thinning and not the top? Makes no sense. You’re … [ visit site to read more ]  Read More →

So for about 4 months I’ve had to bald spot on lower right cheek. the bald spots were very smooth but now I fill little and blond hairs sprouting up. What caused this? Is it stress or alopecia or cancer? What can I do ? Doubtful that it is cancer. It could be stress induced or it could be alopecia areata, but it’s impossible to say without an exam. I’d really  Read More →

How many hairs are lost each day from an average moustache? Is moustache hair more or less likely to fall out than hair on the head? I have been working in the food industry for more than 20 years. Many manufacturers are beginning to require covering moustaches while working with food. Best regards The best I can tell you is that the overall moustache hair cycle runs between 2-6 months. The telogen (resting) phase  Read More →

I am a male in my late 20’s, I’ve had hair loss for about 3 years. Went to a DR in the city in March and he prescribed Finasteride and Minoxidil. After about a month, I started seeing GREAT results, hair became stronger and stopped falling out and began growing again! Then 2 or 3 weeks ago, I started shedding again like crazy and it has not stopped and I beleive my hair is getting worse again. I was on Iron supplements since before...

Dear Doctor Rassman, I read a recent post on your blog and it got me thinking. -Propecia usually does work on the crown. -Propecia usually doesn’t work on the hairline. -Propecia blocks DHT. Is there a posiibility that the genetics of frontal balding and crown balding are different? -The baldness on the crown is more dependant on adrogens then frontal baldness. -Maybe crown baldness is more of a result of the androgen receptor mutation then...

Hi, I’m currently 35 years old & I know I shouldn’t worry about it but I think about my hair quite often. I am probably currently a NW2 & have a little thinning in my temples but what I just noticed recently after getting a haircut that the hair in my front & my back kind of make a split in the upper sides of my head. When I push my hair back in that area, I can see maybe thinner hair & some of my skin starting to...

This is a comment we received to a post from last week — Settling In to a Hair Loss Pattern : “ and even the balding patients who start as a class 5 may not go much further ” I am a little confused about this comment, does not everyone who start balding start at a class 2 which progresses towards a 3, then 4 and so on. how can a person start at class 5 if they already have a … [ visit site to read more ]  Read More →

I’ve always read that we lose 50-100 hairs a day but how much of that hair comes from the scalp or do we really lose 50-100 hair from the scalp? It would certainly explain the 30+ strands of hair that gets caught on my comb whenever I brush my hair. We typically lose 100 scalp hairs each day… and most of that loss may occur when you are outside with the wind blowing through your hair doing your … [ visit site to read more ]...
