Dr. Pak’s Life in the ER and NHI

This is a personal story written by Dr. Jae Pak: While I am fully trained in hair transplant surgery by Dr. Rassman and it has been my primary practice over the years, I am also trained in emergency medicine. As such, I keep up my skills as an emergency physician at local hospitals in the community a few times a month. This gives me a unique perspective in my professional and personal life. I see the best and worst in people. Despite what you may think about hair transplant patients, they come from all walks of life. They are not the super wealthy or the Hollywood celebrities. Sure, there are a few of those, but most of my patients are plumbers…

Mine feels like a life of some dramatic defining events over the past few weeks. I had the privilege of being in South Africa for the FIFA Soccer World cup, which has been widely acclaimed as a huge success. Along with millions of others, not least of all the African people who proudly hosted this stunning event, without hiccup and with almost relative...
Is it possible that cut pills (generic Proscar in fourths) have a shorter half life than Propecia with its protective coating still intact? Propecia and Proscar aren’t time released medications, so the protective coating wouldn’t change the half-life of the medication. A big reason for the coating is to protect pregnant women, as women...
A couple months ago I was invited to speak before the Anderson School of Business at UCLA about entrepreneurship, and I was able to talk about the diversity experienced in the multiple careers I’ve held since receiving my Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia. So from time to time I’ll share some of these personal...
Doc, I read that Rogaine has a half-life of about 22 hours in skin. Assuming you have no side effects from applying it all at once, could you apply double the recommended amount once per day and have the same effect? Minoxidil was originally a not-that-great oral high blood pressure medication called Loniten. The results varied in the treatment...
Dr. Rassman, I really can’t think of any other industry – medical or professional – that has a preeminent member so willing to directly interact with the general public. You do a great service (and a excellent technical execution of it with your website) and I wanted to start off by thanking you for your contribution. Imagine a...

And for men and women suffering from hair loss, their eyes gravitate toward their adored superstar’s lustrous locks with envy. What is your personal opinion of rogaine/minoxidil regarding its effectiveness? Even though it’s FDA approved, most of the objective literature I find says its results are minimal, disappointing, that its window of working at all is brief etc. I noticed your NHI website doesn’t give it a good review. I’d estimate that minoxidil...
Although hundreds of questions are asked and answered on the Hair Restoration Discussion Forums daily, the most common is likely hair loss patients asking how many follicular unit grafts are necessary to fill their balding scalp. Despite the fact that this question is quite common, it’s difficult to answer and unique to nearly every patient....
This hair loss question was answered by Dr. Glenn Charles of Florida who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians. His professional answer is below. It seems to me that in quite a few of the post-op photos posted by hair transplant patients, their scalps still have a pinkish tint in
