Not long ago, I wrote an article on five signs it’s time to fire your barber or stylist . Today, after a batch of particularly difficult clients, I’ve decided to write a followup piece listing the five signs its time to fire your client . The article is really aimed at those who stand behind the chair, but it may also be a good read for clients as well. For a client to receive a truly great experience, I think there should be a mutual respect between the client and service provider. Just as a client can fire a haircutter , a barber or

In the News – Like a Forest Fire of Hair Loss
Snippet from the article : Matt Kelley was 38 when he first noticed a round, hairless spot in his beard. Within six weeks, every inch of his body that once had hair — including his eyebrows, eyelashes, arms and head — was completely bald. “It was like a forest fire of hair loss,” Mr. Kelley … [ visit site to read more ]  Read More →
Leave the Hat at Home
Behind the chair, I serve an exclusively male clientele and most of my cuts tend to be shorter, clipper cut styles as these cuts are my speciality. Like most barbers or stylists performing clipper work, my ideal client is one who shows up without a lot of product in his hair and free from lines created by wearing a hat. This enables me to see how...
How Can You be Sure You Get all of the Follicular Units You Paid For?
How can you be sure that you will receive all the grafts that you paid for? When a doctor says he is going to transplant 3,000 or 4,000 grafts, how can you be sure that you will not be fooled and receive less than the planned number? Is there a way to figure it  Read More →
Slick Retro Style
Slick Retro Style
I’m really enjoying seeing some of the classic groomed styles like those in AMC’s Mad Men and I’m even seeing a few clients requesting such styles lately. Could this be a trend? This is a cut I did on my client Tripp a few days ago. It’s a tight classic taper into significant length on top, lots of pomade, and a slick side...
Tipping Your Barber or Stylist
When the holidays approach, I often get asked questions regarding appropriate tipping etiquette for your barber or stylist.  Generally, for your last haircut before Christmas, it is customary to tip the normal cost of a visit.  If you normally pay your barber $25, then a $25 tip would be appropriate.  If you share a close personal realtionship...
Finding a Barber or Stylist
While sitting at my neighborhood pub a few days ago, a guy asked me what I do for a living. Of course, I told him about my barber salons and that I’m the Men’s Hair Guide for About.com. He explained that he was never really satisfied with his haircuts (and I could see why). He went on to explain how he kept going to the same barber time...
Hair Loss at the Cowlick
Hi Doctor, Great to find a forum that cuts through all the nonsense on balding; this really is a great service. I am a 25yo male with a hairline receding around two inches at one side. On this receding side I have a “cow’s lick,”(not sure of medical definition!) and this seems to be where the majority of the loss is occurring. I...
5 Myths About Hair Loss
I found a great article from Dr. John P. Schwinning of the International Hair Surgical Group that debunks some of the common myths about hair loss. Dr. Schwinning explains that 40% of men over the age of 40 will experience some form of hair loss, but none due to the conditions listed below. These myths simply “defy logic and basic science.”...
Recession Ready Haircut, Bull Market Price
Just caught the season premiere of Million Dollar Listing on Bravo TV. During the episode, realtor Josh Flagg states that he wants his look to reflect this more conservative time, so he gets a recession ready buzzcut… at Jose Eber Salon in Beverly Hills! Too bad he didn’t check out my article on how to choose either a barber or stylist...
Get a Haircut, Give a Little Hope
Flipping through some old barbershop photos today, I came across a shot of an old client of mine who had the best head of hair I’ve ever seen on a human. Christopher’s hair was incredible — thick, black, and shiny. His shoulder-length mop was the kind of hair men hated him for and women could only wish they had. One day, he came...
