Another haircut, another barber

February 6th, 2010 admin

I decided it was time to get another haircut. Previously I had been keeping the sides and back of my hair very short- a 1 or 2 clipper guard- and, sadly, I can no longer do this so it seems to get a bit too long faster than I want. I went to my regular place only to find the gal that cut my hair last time was not working so, I waited for the next available barber. This was entertaining. I explained to him, much like the gal before, that I had a scar and that I would like my hair cut as …

Finding a Barber or Stylist
While sitting at my neighborhood pub a few days ago, a guy asked me what I do for a living. Of course, I told him about my barber salons and that I’m the Men’s Hair Guide for About.com. He explained that he was never really satisfied with his haircuts (and I could see why). He went on to explain how he kept going to the same barber time...
Michael Finds a New (and Great!) Barber
Two weeks ago I decided it was past time to get my hair trimmed, as it had been approximately 2 months. I went to what I consider my “regular” place only to find that none of the barbers I have had recently were working, so, I took the first available. I did my normal routine of explaining that I had a scar and that I did not want it visible....
Tipping Your Barber or Stylist
When the holidays approach, I often get asked questions regarding appropriate tipping etiquette for your barber or stylist.  Generally, for your last haircut before Christmas, it is customary to tip the normal cost of a visit.  If you normally pay your barber $25, then a $25 tip would be appropriate.  If you share a close personal realtionship...
Recession Ready Haircut, Bull Market Price
Just caught the season premiere of Million Dollar Listing on Bravo TV. During the episode, realtor Josh Flagg states that he wants his look to reflect this more conservative time, so he gets a recession ready buzzcut… at Jose Eber Salon in Beverly Hills! Too bad he didn’t check out my article on how to choose either a barber or stylist...

What a Difference a Good Haircut Makes
What a Difference a Good Haircut Makes
I was flipping through a magazine this morning and came across an image of actor Nicholas Hoult (from the movie A Single Man and thought the haircut he’s sporting recently compliments his face incredibly well. One of his past hairstyles was a longish shag haircut that, I think, made him look more boyish and hid his face. The new look is...
Michael’s 6-week haircut
Today I decided to stop and get my first post-surgery hair cut. I go to the same place every time, but the same person doesn’t necessarily cut my hair. This time I had a new stylist that I hadn’t seen before. I warned her that I had a scar and wanted to be sure that the scar was not visible after the cut. I had asked if she had any previous...
Leave the Hat at Home
Behind the chair, I serve an exclusively male clientele and most of my cuts tend to be shorter, clipper cut styles as these cuts are my speciality. Like most barbers or stylists performing clipper work, my ideal client is one who shows up without a lot of product in his hair and free from lines created by wearing a hat. This enables me to see how...
Short Back & Sides
Short Back & Sides
This year, during fashion shows and in magazines, I’m seeing a lot of mean wearing short sides with a long top (the classic “short back and sides” style). While I’m not seeing the style trickling down to the masses just yet, I think it’s starting to catch on and it should. … Read Full Post  Read More →
Why Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is Becoming More Popular Amongst Balding Men
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has become exceedingly popular in balding men who desire to keep their hair cropped short on the sides and back of their head. Though both Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) via microscopic dissection and FUE cause some scarring, the main advantage of FUE is that it does not create a linear scar  Read More →
