I’m a 24 year old male and have microcytic anemia (most likely) due to iron deficiency. I had been able to halt my MPB hair loss by taking finasteride (1mg) since age 18, however experienced rapid shedding about nine months ago. To stop the hair loss, I added minoxidil 5% to my regimen and started taking ferrous gluconate tablets for my anemia. My hair has all grown back and I’m trying to assess if the iron supplement, the minoxidil or both likely contributed to my marked … [ visit site to read more ]

Is There a Good Way to Wean off of Minoxidil?
Hi Doc, I have to say, this is really nice what you’re doing in this site. My question is this… I was using minoxidil for a year and I suddenly stopped. I had hair fall immediately and now my hair is very thin. How does someone stop or taper minoxidil treatment? Currently I am on propecia medication. Do you think I’m still going...
What If I’m Allergic to an Ingredient in Minoxidil?
Dr. Rassman, Thanks again for maintaining this blog. I have asked a number of questions before and appreciate your prompt responses. I have a few questions about minoxidil and propecia. Here they are: I have been using minoxidil (liquid solution) for almost a year. A couple of months back it really started to irritate my scalp. I am almost convinced...
My Generic Finasteride Manufacturer Has Changed
Hello Dr Rassman, Ive been on propecia for about 2 years now, for the first year i was taking the brand name tablets but i read on here that i would be able to get the generic 5mg finasteride tablets and just cut them up into 4 pieces. So since then ive just been cutting up the pills. The last time i went to pick up my prescription the actual tablet...
I Haven’t Consistently Used Minoxidil — Is It OK to Just Stop Completely?
I’ve been using minoxidil on and off for about 8 months now. I apply it once a day and quite often miss days or a few days. At one point I missed two weeks. I don’t think it has done much for my hair and have recently started propecia. With regards to stopping minoxidil (if you think I should), should I come off it gradually or will stopping...

Blurred Vision from Minoxidil?
I have taken propecia and minoxidil for approximately 2 weeks (and have since stopped). I noticed blurred vision and believe it to be attributed to either the propecia or minoxidil, or both. My questions is if my blurred vision is associated with either product. will the blurring go away now that I have stopped. Please respond. I haven’t read...
Switching to a Different Brand of Generic Minoxidil?
Hi Doc, I have a question I am from India and have been using Dr Reddys Minox 5% but right now I am in United states is it ok if I change into any Local brands out here in the market?Would there be an effect on my hair? I know it sounds crazy but I dont want to take my chance. It doesn’t sound crazy! There should be no difference between the...
Castration and Hair Regrowth
From what I have read, castration stops hair loss however, castration will not regrow hair that has been lost. If this is true, why would Proscar grow any hair? It is my understanding Proscar blocks a percentage of DHT, which leads to the effectiveness of the product. If someone has been castrated there is o% DHT and still no hair regrowth? Also...
Dr Rassman’s Minoxidil Opinion?
What is your personal opinion of rogaine/minoxidil regarding its effectiveness? Even though it’s FDA approved, most of the objective literature I find says its results are minimal, disappointing, that its window of working at all is brief etc. I noticed your NHI website doesn’t give it a good review. I’d estimate that minoxidil...
Can a Straightening Iron Permanently Damage Hair?
Hi, would just like to say firstly that I have found your site really helpful and informative, thanks! I’m an 18 year old female, currently straighten my fringe every day and I’m really concerned that this will cause permanent damage. I know that straightening can make hair brittle, causing it to fall out until a new one grows, but I...
